Diam Bouchage expands its range of corks with a new choice of permeabilities

28 November 2022

To offer producers the most appropriate solutions for their wines, Diam Bouchage has expanded its range of corks for still wines. As each wine has its own particular needs in terms of gas exchange, from January 2023 the French corkmaker will be offering a more open permeability option for its corks dedicated to long-keeping wines, Diam 10 and Diam 30.

For 20 years, Diam Bouchage has been the only manufacturer to offer an organoleptic safety solution with corks guaranteed, individually, to be free from releasable TCA*. Diam Bouchage believes that oxygen control is at the heart of modern oenology.

The company has been focusing its efforts on this for many years, collaborating with universities worldwide, investing heavily in R&D, creating an integrated oenological cluster and developing new, adapted industrial capacities.

In 2021, Diam Bouchage launched a new closure, Mytik Diam 10, for long-keeping sparkling wines, with a much lower quantity of 02 desorbed - called OIR (Oxygen Initial Release) - than traditional closures, as well as a very low OTR (Oxygen Transfer Rate), consistently from one closure to the next.

This year, it's the turn of the Diam range for still wines to be enriched, in response to requests from some of the brand's customers.

"Until now, for long-ageing wines, we've only offered one type of permeability - very low (i.e. leak-proof) - which is particularly well-suited to slow evolution in the bottle. For wines with a more reductive profile, our customers asked us for a closure with a higher O2 content", says Dimitri Tixador, Permeability Manager in Diam Bouchage's R&D department.

The company therefore worked to develop a new formula offering higher permeability while retaining the same mechanical characteristics essential to the cork's durability over time.

That was the complexity,” continues Dimitri Tixador. Producing a cork with high initial mechanical properties, and therefore density, while at the same time allowing a greater oxygen supply."

This technical feat is the result of more than 3 years of studies and precision calculations on oxygen supply through the cork. The manufacture of these two new products plays on the balance between formulation and density.

For Bruno de Saizieu, Sales Director, this is just the beginning of a major breakthrough in corking:

"This innovation is perfectly in line with our vision: tomorrow, our customers will be bottling the same wine on the same day, with different Diam sizes, depending on the bottle's destination and the evolution of the wine desired by its creator.

"This innovation is perfectly in line with our vision: tomorrow, our customers will be bottling the same wine on the same day, with different Diam sizes depending on the destination of the bottle and the evolution of the wine desired by its creator. Consumers will be able to order bottles of the same wine to enjoy them at their best at different times!

This new permeability will enable the wine's aromas to open up more quickly, while guaranteeing controlled aging over time.

Diam Bouchage's range now offers winemakers a genuine oenological tool, enabling them to set different aging trajectories for their wines.
