RDV DIAM: French consumers and organic food

1 July 2021

At the end of the year, Diam Bouchage was able to bring together more than 220 wineries and winegrowers from Bordeaux (on 15 November) and Burgundy (on 13 December) to take part in two debates organised by Olivier Poels, deputy editor of the Revue des Vins de France, on the subject of ‘French consumers and organic wine’, with a selection of speakers from different backgrounds who were particularly expert in the subject!

- Florence MEA and Florent GUHL of Agence BIO, the French agency for the development and promotion of organic farming.
- Patricia CHAIROPOULOS, head of nutrition at 60 Millions de Consommateurs magazine
- Patrick HOURDEAU and Nathalie VILLETELLE, of Match supermarkets
- Dr. Pierre SOUVET, cardiologist and president of the Association Santé Environnement France

Their presentations provided an overview of the state of organic wine in France and an understanding of consumers' expectations and perceptions of the various labels grouped under the generic name “organic wine”. Discussions also provided a better understanding of the role of supermarkets in this growing market and issues related to health and environmental protection.

During the closing lunch, the owners of the wineries present commented on the selection of their BIO Diam cap wines offered for tasting, arousing the general interest of the audience.

A successful premiere in the Vaucluse for our RDV DIAM on 23 January: around sixty people took part in the debate moderated by Olivier Poels, deputy director of the Revue des Vins de France, on the subject of "The French consumer and organic wine", with a selection of speakers from different backgrounds:

Florent GUHL, Director of Agence BIO, the French agency for the development and promotion of organic farming.

Patricia CHAIROPOULOS, head of the food section of 60 Millions de Consommateurs magazine

Louise BROWAEYS, agronomist CSR (AgroParisTech)

Eric BIRLOUEZ, agricultural engineer, sociologist of agriculture and food

Paolo BASSO, World's Best Sommelier 2013

Already discussed in Bordeaux and Burgundy, the theme of organic wine once again elicited a wide range of reactions and questions, providing an opportunity to assess the current state of organic wine in France and to understand consumer expectations and perceptions of the various labels grouped together under the generic name of ‘organic wine’.

At the closing lunch, the owners of the wineries present were able to comment on the selection of their organic wines (or other eco-responsible approaches) corked in Diam, which were available for tasting.

This month, our customers were able to attend and discuss the theme of ‘The French consumer and organic wine’ at two exceptional RDV Diam events, which are still proving very popular.

The first event took place on 17 June in Saint-Cyprien, in the Roussillon region - a first for the Pyrénées Orientales! The 60 guests took part in the debate moderated by Olivier Poels, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of La Revue des Vins de France, with a selection of top-level speakers:

Paolo BASSO, World's Best Sommelier 2013

Eric BIRLOUEZ, agricultural engineer, sociologist of agriculture and food

Patricia CHAIROPOULOS, Head of Food at 60 Millions de Consommateurs magazine

Yann CHABIN, Managing Partner, CSR expert (new speaker on this theme)

The subject of organic wine, which has already been addressed on several occasions, once again provoked a wide range of reactions and questions in this region, which is home to a large number of converted winegrowers: Occitanie has over 25,000 hectares of vines cultivated organically, representing 9% of the region's vineyards.

The sumptuous setting of Fontevraud Abbey was the venue for the second RDV Diam meeting in June. The winegrowers of the Loire Valley, who had already welcomed us in 2015, were delighted with this new edition of the RDV Diam and were able to benefit from our expert speakers on the same theme.
